The country of Cuba is a different world, and between the government driven low level of poverty and the abundance of rich opportunity that is written on every inch of soil, little makes sense as I look out the windows and cruise down the road in a pampered 56 Chevy taxi.
It’s a secluded land, pressed down by an egocentric and self-centered governmental structure, and it’s clear that their people suffer from it’s unwritten consequences. When a man gets told he can’t do something for so long, he begins to believe it. When he hears nothing of hope, he lives in a state of despair. Yet when he’s told that he can’t have this or that, his curiosity peaks, and he’s left hungry for what’s beyond his known horizon. He lomgs to be free, and we, to explore their world of the forgotten.
As of late, the door to do so has widened, and as soon as I learned of it, I thought of two things – the church and World Race Alumni. Both have great pains of hunger, so why not offer an opportunity to explore the Cuban land of the unknown, to burn for freedom themselves, and though most Cubans have little choice, invite them to a life pounding of liberty within?
This week, former World Racers embark on their second journey into the heart-throbbing unknown to discover or rekindle that fleeting flame of freedom, the whisper, that scream they so long to hear, or that river they dearly desire to live neck deep in. Is it truly possible? Does He really care enough? For so long, after self-seclusion, hearing little or nothing at all, or being surrounded with wreaking decay, it often takes an act of brave exploration, re-discovery, and pure risk. Why stay put when you know there’s another undiscovered world within yourself?
I ask myself that question often, and tomorrow I walk into it with some World Race Alumni and their guests to witness that overwhelming world unfold. Enough with being content. Listen, move, and take the risk with us. From rural Cuba to your back porch swing, the whisper sounds the same – “come away with Me”.
You’re no longer a slave of suffrage, but your heart is a rich land of opportunity waiting for a chance. Will you take the trek?
